More than a dozen language communities across the island will gather tomorrow for the first formal celebration of UNESCO International Mother Language Day.
The free event, organised by Culture Vannin and Mooinjer Veggey as part of the Year of the Manx Language, runs from 12pm to 4:30pm at the Promenade Methodist Church in Douglas.
Representatives from Brazil, Lithuania, Greece, the Philippines, Latvia, South Africa, Nepal, Zimbabwe, Ukraine, Bulgaria and the Isle of Man will host display tables, share cultural activities and take part in short talks, song and dance workshops, and “Mini Manx Language Workshops”.
Information will also be available from Café Lingo, the One World Centre and the Office of Tynwald on its Manx language inclusion work.
Event organiser Tiffany Kerruish said the afternoon would be “colourful, fun and inclusive”, offering a chance for anyone interested in languages or island culture to drop in and take part.
Craft activities for children will be provided by Mooinjer Veggey.
Kerruish said marking the day during the Year of the Manx Language was especially significant, highlighting both the growth of Manx Gaelic and the diversity of languages spoken across the Island.
