Onchan Commissioner Gabriella Corkish has announced her intention to stand for the House of Keys in the 2026 General Election.
In a declaration letter, the prospective candidate acknowledged questions have been raised about her age and experience, but argued that “experience should be judged by evidence of delivery, not by assumption or length of service alone”.
Miss Corkish pointed to her record with the local authority, stating: “In a relatively short period with the Onchan District Commissioners, I have led and contributed to decisions and motions that have delivered tangible improvements for residents and strengthened local accountability.”
She also criticised current government standards, saying: “There is an increasing expectation from the public that those entrusted with responsibility will not only set direction, but will ensure that it is properly delivered.
“At present, there is a growing concern that this standard is not consistently being met.”
Miss Cornish lists her priorities as seeking greater transparency in health and social care, protecting the triple lock pension, maintaining Winter Fuel support for those who rely on it and improving education provision.
She also highlighted concerns over travel costs, saying: “High travel costs continue to act as a barrier, limiting both visitor numbers and economic opportunity.”
She added: “The people of Onchan deserve representation that is prepared to ask questions, challenge where necessary, and contribute constructively to improving outcomes. I intend to provide that representation.”
Miss Corkish is the first candidate to formally announce for Onchan, but sitting MHKs Rob Callister and Julie Edge are expecting to stand for re-election.
