Douglas Council has unveiled proposals to revitalise the city centre, featuring a new ‘DOUGLAS’ sculpture, street seating and monthly produce markets.
The initiatives form part of the authority’s City Centre Strategy, developed following feedback from a survey by the Regeneration and Community Committee.
Plans include a large, moveable sculpture featuring the word ‘DOUGLAS’ and the Manx spelling ‘Doolish’, designed to create photo opportunities.
Armrests
Single-seat ‘Deacon’ cube installations with armrests would be placed along shopping streets, alongside a series of monthly produce markets on Loch Promenade from April to September.
The Council is seeking funding from the Department for Enterprise’s Local Economy Fund. While up to £100,517 could be temporarily allocated from reserves, the authority has said the schemes will only proceed once full funding is secured.
Chair of the Regeneration and Community Committee, Councillor Natalie Byron-Teare, said: “Douglas City Council is committed to creating a city centre that’s fun, safe and full of life – and this proposal marks an exciting step in that vision.”
She added: “Douglas deserves a vibrant, welcoming city centre. From photo-ready sculptures to comfy resting spots and lively produce markets, these plans are all about making our city the place to be for residents and visitors alike.
