The cancellation of University College Isle of Man’s undergraduate degree in Health and Social Care will have “no direct bearing” on recruitment, retention, or training within Manx Care, according to the Minister Claire Christian.
Ms Christian was quizzed on the issued by Liberal Vannin leader Lawrie Hooper.
The minister confirmed the decision to terminate the programme was made independently by UCM and was not subject to consultation with Manx Care or the Department.
“No prior discussions occurred between the Director of Education for Manx Care and the Principal of UCM on this matter,” she said. The withdrawal was described as a “commercial decision,” prompted by “sustained low enrolment and the programme’s resulting lack of viability.”
Ms Christian emphasised that the degree did not confer a qualification recognised within a regulated healthcare profession and was “not integrated into Manx Care’s workforce development pipeline”.
