Isle of Man Creamery says it has stopped exporting Manx butter due to recent shortages on the island.
Islanders have said they have struggled to get hold of the butter in several shops around the island.
The Creamery explained: “Butter is produced using the fat that is skimmed off the raw milk that enters the Creamery from our 28 dairy farms who produce the milk on which all of our grass fed dairy products are based.”
It said several factors have reduced availability, including a move by customers to whole milk, assigning more fat to cheese products and the amount of fat contained in raw milk being lower at certain times of the year.
As a result, export, including supplies to a major UK retailer, have been paused. “This allows us to prioritise our local loyal customers,” the company said.
The Creamery apologised for any inconvenience, adding: “We would like to thank our customers for their continued support and choosing to buy local, which is more important than ever.”
Spreadable butter will return to shops and doorstep deliveries from next month.
