History was made in last night’s General Election as Daniel Davison became the youngest person ever elected to the House of Keys.
The 18-year-old secured 1,147 votes in Glenfaba and Peel to win one of the constituency’s two seats, alongside Katryna Baptist.
His election marks a milestone in Manx politics and comes two decades after the Isle of Man lowered the minimum age for candidates standing for the House of Keys from 21 to 18.
Prior to this year’s election, one of the youngest figures elected in the modern era was Juan Watterson, who entered the House of Keys in 2006 at the age of 26 before later becoming the youngest Speaker of the House of Keys in modern times.
However, Davison’s victory sets a new benchmark.
New Benchmark
The achievement is believed to make him the youngest person elected to the House of Keys since records began in 1417.
Davison’s election was one of the most notable moments of an election night that saw significant turnover across the island, with voters returning a large number of first-time politicians to the national parliament.
His success in Glenfaba and Peel also came with a strong personal mandate from voters. Davison finished second in the constituency on 1,147 votes, behind only Baptist, who topped the poll with 1,232.
