Dawn Cracks Three Hour Barrier at Newport Marathon

Dawn Atherton of Western AC broke the three-hour barrier for the first time at the Newport Marathon in South Wales, with a superb time of 2:56:34.

She was fifth woman overall and the winner of the 40 age category.

According to my unofficial records, this time elevates her to 11th place on the Isle of Man’s all-time list of female Marathon runners.

Dawn admits that she deliberately kept her participation low-key, with only a few people aware of her plans in advance.

Having narrowly missed the sub-three-hour target on previous attempts, she felt the weight of expectation and opted for a more controlled approach to race day.

That included avoiding the pressures of a mass start and choosing a quieter build-up, similar to her preparation for a previous outing in Chester.

The strategy paid off, allowing Dawn to focus fully on the execution of her race as she finally achieved a long-standing personal goal.

Her achievement at the weekend represents one of the most notable Isle of Man distance running performances of recent years, underlining her position among the island’s leading endurance athletes.
