A Douglas councillor has described government’s decision to stop paper recycling at bring banks on the Island as ‘short-sighted’.
Chair of the Environmental Services Committee Falk Horning says Douglas Council will be keeping its own for people to use and will carry on collecting the material as part of its kerbside recycling scheme.
The authority says it collects 160 tonnes of paper through its collections and bales up 180 tonnes of paper at its recycling processing centre at Ballacottier yearly.
The Department of Infrastructure announced in October that stopping collecting paper from bring banks would save between £35,000 and £50,000 each year.

It follows a significant fall in the amount of paper being brought to the collection facilities.
There were 1400 tonnes collected in 2004 but this has now dropped to just under 200 tonnes.
Councillor Horning says the removal of the scheme will ‘affect’ those who live outside of Douglas.
