Elizabeth Bankes-Jones has been awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Commendation for her work in education, both here and overseas.
Sir John Lorimer presented Mrs Bankes-Jones with the award at Government House.
Mrs Bankes-Jones is a primary school teacher and psychotherapist who, over the years, has helped numerous children with special needs and their families.
In 2005, following a project to find pen pals for her pupils in Africa, she set up a charity, S4U, to raise money and buy land to build a senior school in Uganda.
The school, called the Good Hope School, benefits the whole community and the fundraising continues, facilitating a free dental clinic for the village with Dental Aid Mission.
On receiving the award, Mrs Bankes-Jones was keen to mention how the award was not only for her, but also for all those with whom she has worked, on all her different projects.
