Manx Care has officially vacated Crookall House, ending an 86-year chapter in the Isle of Man’s healthcare history.
The building, once a pioneering maternity hospital, has been a cornerstone of community health since its establishment in 1939.
Originally funded by Arthur B. Crookall, then Mayor of Douglas, in memory of his late wife Jane, the facility opened as the Jane Crookall Maternity Home in 1927 before expanding into a state-of-the-art maternity hospital in 1939.
At the time, it was hailed as one of the finest in the British Isles, featuring sound-insulated wards, discreet lighting, and dedicated staff quarters.
Innovation
Over the decades, Crookall House became synonymous with healthcare innovation, witnessing over 32,000 births—including that of Sir Barry Gibb.
It played a key role in advancing maternity services, from introducing blood transfusions and Caesarean sections to welcoming male nursing students after the Sex Discrimination Act of 1975.
In 1992, maternity services moved to Noble’s Hospital, and Crookall House transitioned into an administrative and community health hub.
“Crookall House has been more than just a building—it has been a place of first breaths, lifelong careers, and quiet dedication,” said a Manx Care spokesperson.
“As we move forward, we carry with us the values it embodied: compassion, innovation, and community.”
It will go on to form part of the controversial Westmoreland Village scheme.
Key Milestones
- 1924: Dr. C.S. Pantin appeals to Tynwald for a maternity home due to poor childbirth conditions.
- 1927: Arthur B. Crookall donates a house on Demesne Road; the first Jane Crookall Maternity Home opens.
- 1939: A new purpose-built maternity hospital opens, funded by a £10,000 trust from Mr. Crookall.
- 1946: Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees is born at the facility.
- 1992: Maternity services relocate to Noble’s Hospital; Crookall House repurposed.
- 2025: Final services vacate the building.
