The Department of Education, Sport and Culture (DESC) has confirmed plans for an external review of University College Isle of Man (UCM), covering its operations, curriculum, student experience, and staffing structures.
The review, set to begin in January 2026, was said in Keys to be the first fully comprehensive external assessment since the 1990s.
Education Minister Daphne Caine stated: “The department will be looking to engage with an external qualified contractor to conduct a comprehensive review of University College Isle of Man, including its operations, curriculum, student experience, staffing, structures, skills, and culture.”
Julie Edge questioned the timing, asking when the last external review took place.
Mrs Caine confirmed it was in the 1990s but noted UCM undergoes a tripartite review every three years with Jersey and Guernsey, which began in 2017.
Chris Thomas MHK raised concerns about the Island Campus initiative, referencing a report by KPMG.
But Mrs Caine clarified: “The purpose of the Island Campus report was to provide information in relation to the potential development of an island campus for the Isle of Man following action in the island plan.”
Pressed for more information, Mrs Caine said: “I have no further details about it, but the department has committed to undertaking an external review of UCM.”
