The Manx National Farmers’ Union is demanding answers from Isle of Man Meats and DEFA over sharply rising Board payments.
In a letter addressed to the Chairman and Board of Isle of Man Meats, as well as the Agriculture Minister, the MNFU said it had reviewed the government’s written response to a Tynwald question from Onchan MHK Julie Edge regarding remuneration for Board Members.
While the Union acknowledged that reasonable compensation for directors is expected, it said the “significantly increasing expenditure”, including invoices and changes to the payment structure, requires clear explanation.
The MNFU is now asking who authorised any alteration to Board payment arrangements and on what basis such changes were justified.
Value for Money?
The Union is pressing both DEFA and the Board of Isle of Man Meats to demonstrate how increased fees claimed by the Chairman and Directors have translated into measurable improvements at the meat plant.
It argues that any additional spending must show value for money not only for the agricultural sector, which relies heavily on the facility, but also for taxpayers.
The MNFU has questioned whether DEFA, as the majority shareholder, has set performance parameters for the Board and whether any ongoing scrutiny has taken place to ensure improvements are being delivered.
It is seeking evidence from either the Board or DEFA that enhancements to operations have resulted directly from the increased expenditure.
Make Report Public
The Union also raised the possibility that some of the spending may relate to a DEFA-commissioned report.
If so, it calls for the report to be made public.
The Union wants confirmation on whether any recommendations from such a report have been implemented at the plant and whether these have resulted in demonstrable improvements.
The MNFU concluded by expressing its expectation that answers will be provided within a reasonable timeframe, emphasising the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of a facility central to the island’s farming community.
