Carlisle United boss Paul Simpson has praised Manx footballer Freddie O’Donoghue for his pre-season form.

The 17-year-old former Peel man has played in four pre-season games for the League Two side.

So far he has scored in Carlisle’s first outing at Penrith and earned praise for his performance in last Friday’s 2-2 draw at St Mirren.

Simpson told the Cumberland News & Star: “I’ve got to mention young Freddie, because he came on and showed great enthusiasm, good pace and also a real spirit to get involved in that little scuffle with [Shaun] Rooney.

“He was punching way above his weight, but he didn’t back down and I like that. He’s shown some real spirit.”

Simpson added that O’Donoghue is “likely” to remain in the first team picture going into the new league season.

The Isle of Man FA praised O”Donoghue, saying: “Keep working hard and keep going Freddie!”
