The government has set out an aim to improve air and sea links to the island as part of its new transport strategy.
It is to go before Tynwald in October.
The document states that “external links are critical for both economic growth and for the societal wellbeing of our society” and commits to working to “maintain and enhance connectivity via land and sea routes”.
Air
For air travel, the strategy confirms, “We will continue to develop our air links to support our plans for population and economic growth.” A key commitment is to “improve the experience of all passengers, including those with reduced mobility”.
Sea
Regarding sea links, the government says it “will continue to develop our sea links to support our plans for population and economic growth”.
This will involve an update to the Harbours Strategy to “create a masterplan for delivering sustainable sea links”.
The strategy also includes a plan to “electrify commercial harbours to allow vessels to connect directly and remove the need to use fossil-fuel powered generators when in port”.
A central theme is decarbonisation, with a pledge to work “towards the decarbonisation of these sectors, delivering more sustainable infrastructure and assets”.
