Fourteen months after tile damage closed part of the NSC’s deep pool, the government department responsible for it still doesn’t know the root cause.
Minister Daphne Caine was quizzed on the issue by MHKs this week as they sought an update on NSC maintenance.
Jason Moorhouse (Arbory, Castletown and Malew) asked what had been done since the last update was provided to members in July.
Responding, Mrs Caine told members that “a series of tests and analysis have been undertaken once the department understands the root cause, repair works will be carried out”.
She added: “If the department fixes the tiles without fully understanding the root cause, I would be concerned it could happen again.”
This didn’t satisfy Mr Moorhouse who described the government’s approach to the issue, which first arose in November 2023, as “very, very laid back” and asked for when people can expect progress.
Mrs Caine told Keys that the repairs are a “complex issue”. And as I said, ” and added that “once we understand the root cause, the repair works will be carried out”.
Following later questions, as well as Mr Moorhouse’s suggestion that it was becoming as complicated as “rockets that go to the moon”, Mrs Caine said she “shares the frustration” of islanders and wants to see the pool repaired as soon as possible.
