Govt to Challenge Misinformation and Disinformation

Isle of Man Government Office, Douglas

The Chief Minister says his government is working to improve how it engages at all levels of the community.

He was asked by Chris Thomas MHK if a review is needed of government communications is needed…

The centralised Government Communication Service was set up in 2014 and “supports ministers and departments on a wide range of public relations, media and communications issues”.

Mr Cannan said: “Communications activities are also undertaken by people throughout the organisation who are not part of the team based in the Cabinet Office – by communications professionals, senior service leaders and politicians, alongside the everyday interactions of community-
facing staff.

“In all cases, engagement with the public and stakeholders aims to be clear, concise accessible and respectful.”

He added that work is underway to ensure government can “address and challenge misinformation and disinformation placed in the public domain”.

Expert

The Chief Minister said that since April this year a “contracted expert” has been working to guide improvements on this, who he says is “in a position to assess objectively the processes currently in place – and how better outcomes might be achieved”.

This, he said, will improve the government’s approach over the near year…
