An MHK has expressed disappointment after the Council of Ministers moved to amend the majority of recommendations from a report on supporting students with learning differences.
The government has issued its formal response to the Select Committee on Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia and Dysgraphia.
Of the 12 recommendations, the DESC accepted only two outright, amended nine, and rejected one.
The rejected proposal called for a centralised workforce of specialist dyslexia teachers, but the department argues the proposal “is not supported by current evidence-based research or best practice”.
Responding on his constituency Facebook page, Rob Callister said: “Ann Corlett, Dawn Kinnish and I, as Chair of the Committee, spent over 18 months examining this important topic on behalf of many concerned families and teachers.
“As a Committee, we will be pushing for all 12 original recommendations to be accepted by Tynwald. However, it is clear that the Council of Ministers and the Department of Education will be using the block vote to amend a number of our recommendations, which is very disappointing.”
Amendments include pushing reporting deadlines from December 2026 to October 2027.
The department accepted recommendation four regarding the automatic sharing of student data on school transitions, saying it “considers this action to be complete”.
Despite the number of amendments, the minister for education Daphne Caine, said her department remains “firmly committed to inclusive education”.
