Historian’s Appeal For Photos

Local historian Andrew Scarffe is seeking assistance for a new book exploring the Manx Electric Railway’s historic goods services.

The proposed book will cover “the goods services and rolling stock (including goods rolling stock proposed but not built); the MER’s unique mail service; the Bonner road/rail wagons, buildings and quarries, etc.”

Scarffe described it as “an interesting book about an overlooked part of the Manx Electric Railway”.

He is now searching for photographs to include, particularly of “the goods rolling stock including the tower wagons; any unusual use of the goods stock, MER road goods vehicles and the buildings at Dhoon Quarry”.

A key request is for “a good quality image of an MER conductor emptying one of the lineside post-boxes”.

Scarffe can be contacted via email at thescarffes@manx.net or at his home address: Andrew Scarffe, ‘Thornycroft’, Main Road, South Cape, Laxey, Isle of Man, IM4 7HZ.
