Housing Shift to Open Doors for More Families

Significant changes to current housing allocations will see more working families become eligible for public sector accommodation, the government has confirmed.

Taking effect from tomorrow (October 1), revisions of income thresholds aim to increase eligibility, better reflecting current earnings and housing costs.

Changes will apply to all applicants on the Isle of Man, and are headlined by a £13,400 increase to the income threshold for parents with three dependent children, unlocking support for previously excluded families.

Inflationary Increases

In addition, from April 2027, thresholds will rise annually in line with the Consumer Prices Index figure for the previous September, ensuring eligibility keeps pace with the cost of living.

Local Authority housing providers will also gain greater flexibility where applicants do not meet residency requirements. Discretion will continue to be considered for cases such as supporting someone at risk of domestic abuse or a former resident with an urgent need to return to the island.

Meanwhile, further changes taking effect in October will mean some public-sector tenants under fixed-term tenancy arrangements may see their weekly rent payment reduced after reassessment.

Existing waiting list applicants do not need to reapply as housing providers will review active applications and update where necessary. Anyone with questions about how the changes affect their housing application or tenancy should contact their housing provider directly.
