Manx National Heritage says it is “extremely disappointed” by recent littering and fire damage at Cronk ny Merriu.
The two-thousand-year-old Manx promontory fort overlooks Port Grenaugh.
Thanking a member of the public for reporting and tidying the damage, MNH noted a previous episode involving a disposable BBQ when a fire spreading to the cliff had to be put out by the Fire Service.
MNH said: “Fire is a real threat to the safety of people, property, wildlife and the historic environment in our care.
“Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the headland this time, although the scars will be visible at Cronk ny Merriu for some time to come.
“It is against the law to damage ancient monuments, which are legally protected forever, for the benefit of the public. Fire is a particular risk as it directly affects the archaeological remains that are present below the surface.
“Manx National Heritage welcomes responsible use of the Isle of Man’s historic environment. If you are planning to enjoy the great outdoors, please respect our beautiful island, leave no trace of your visit and take your litter home.”
