The DoI says a full investigation is underway as part of works to resolves issues with Manxman and the Ben-my-Chree berthing in Liverpool.
Yesterday the Steam Packet announced it will be altering the schedule of its winter Liverpool sailings due to issues discovered through trials.
During the recent berthing trials with Manxman and the Ben, the company said it identified challenges to safely moor vessels at various tidal heights, particularly at the forward end of these vessels.
A DoI spokesperson said that the issue is that the “most southerly fender on the mooring dolphin clashing with mooring lines”.
They added: “The DoI is working closely with the Steam Packet and the designers to bring forward an appropriate solution.
“The priority is to establish a way to overcome the issue at hand while minimising disruption for passengers. A full investigation is currently underway as part of this process.”
The Steam Packet has said it will modify the timings of the Liverpool schedule from early November until the end of December 2024.
Changes
While the introduction of Manxman led to a change of the design scope for the terminal, DoI Minister Tim Crookall said in August that the terminal was “originally specified for the Manannan and the Ben-My-Chree vessels”.
He said that the works for Manxman were “predominantly required to accommodate the impact of her movements in the berth on the quay wall structure”.
However, the DoI spokesperson confirmed to Manx.News that these were limited to works below the waterline and were not to do with the mooring dolphins or other structures.
Mr Crookall also said: “Completion of the Works was issued on the April 5, however, the contract will not be completed until a minimum of 65 weeks after this date.”
As a result, the berthing issues would likely sit inside the 12 month defect period for the contract if it was confirmed that specifications hadn’t been met.
