The government has formally adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance working definition of antisemitism.
It defines antisemitism as a “certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities”.
The Council of Ministers agreed that although the Jewish community on the Isle of Man is small, adoption of the definition may help to foster inclusive communities across the island.
The IHRA definition is intended to help ensure people can speak freely while addressing harmful or discriminatory language should it arise.
Formal adoption of the definition reflects the Isle of Man’s practice of aligning with the UK’s foreign policy and government approach.
The announcement today is timed to coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day.
This evening, Chief Minister Alf Cannan will take part in a ‘Candle in the Window’, a shared and dispersed act of remembrance to create a moment of reflection and unity.
At 8pm people across the island are invited to join the Lieutenant Governor and Bishop Patricia Hillas and light a candle in a window of their choice, whether at home, in a place of worship or elsewhere.
