Treasury Minister Dr Alex Allinson has confirmed a review of the Isle of Man’s immigration routes.
He told Tynwald members this will include potential modifications or closures, to align with UK policies while addressing local economic needs.
The update follows a completed “gap analysis” comparing Manx and UK immigration frameworks, with detailed proposals expected next month.
Dr Allinson said: “The Cabinet Office is maintaining its role in coordinating policy… We recognise the importance of aligning our immigration routes with those of the UK to protect the security and integrity of our Common Travel Area.”
He emphasised balancing alignment with the Isle of Man’s unique requirements, particularly for worker visas, which account for 47% of applications.
Urgency
Kate Lord-Brennan MHK pressed for urgency, citing long-standing concerns over the Health and Care visa and dependent entry rules, asking: “Why is this not being dealt with more urgently?… The Treasury Minister holds the pen over routes now.”
Dr Allinson replied that changes to minimum salaries and dependent rules were “key priorities” but warned of broader impacts: “We need to look at the economic impact… and make sure those affected have due warning.”
Julie Edge MHK highlighted cases of migrant workers earning £13,000 annually, stressing: “You couldn’t afford to rent from Cowley Groves on that.”
Dr Allinson agreed but noted legislative changes require scrutiny.
Ms Lord-Brennan challenged the timeline, asking: “How quickly could he make this change if he wanted to?” With Dr Allinson confirming that changes could be fast-tracked for security threats but pledged a detailed timetable by next month’s sitting.
