Islanders Use Their Ancient Right to Petition

Alison Jones petitioned this year’s sitting

Tynwald Day saw several islanders use their right to  present petitions for redress in a bid to right something they see as wrong.

Anyone with a grievance may present a written petition to ask for Tynwald to help, with the standing orders committee deciding whether or not the petitions are in order.

If they are found to be in order, they can be taken up by any MHK or MLC to attempt to seek the objectives of the petitioner.

This year’s service saw petitions focused on the land registry act, Steam Packet pricing, noise pollution from wind farms, uncompleted government schemes and the horse trams.

Charlie Morrey and Sam Turton spoke to these petitioners.
