The Great Laxey Wheel, the world’s largest working water wheel, is one of nine Manx landmarks now being considered for formal registration.
The registration will giving the landmarks legal protection from demolition or alteration.
The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has issued Proposal to Register Notices for sites spanning more than three centuries of mining, civic and farming heritage.
Alongside the Lady Isabella, the list includes former railway buildings, museums, coastal cottages and the Calf of Man Bird Observatory.
Protecting The Wheel
The wheel, completed in 1854 to pump water from the Great Laxey Mines, has become one of the island’s most recognisable symbols and was restored in recent years as a key piece of industrial engineering and mining history.
Environment Minister Clare Barber MHK said registration “plays an important role in preserving the character of our communities”, encouraging people to take part in the four‑week consultation now underway.
The sites proposed for registration are: Great Laxey Wheel, Foxdale Heritage Centre, Leece Museum, Ward Library, Knockuskey Cottage, Grove Museum, Calf of Man Bird Observatory, Church Farm and Karran’s Farmstead.
A consultation is open for anyone wishing to comment or provide further information on the proposed registrations.
