Remedial work on the Ramsey Swing Bridge has begun after defects were identified in the timber deck beneath the carriageway during a routine structural inspection.
The inspection, carried out as part of the DoI’s regular bridge‑monitoring programme, flagged issues early enough to prevent more serious structural problems.
Structural engineers advised that repairs should begin immediately, and work started on Monday (August 3). The programme is expected to take around three weeks, though poor weather or further defects could extend the timeline.
The bridge, in service since 1892, remains closed to motor vehicles while work continues. Pedestrian access will be maintained where safe and practical.
A detailed structural assessment of the Swing Bridge is planned as part of longer‑term asset management. Any further refurbishment identified may require future capital funding.
The Department thanked the public for their patience while essential safety work is carried out.
