Groves Road is to remain closed into March after an extension was granted to ongoing works.
Douglas South MHK Claire Christian said the extension “has been requested from 21st Jan to 15th March (7 week delay)”.
The extension is to allow “extra works added onto this job that will involve a lot more work than originally planned”.
Contractors Paul Carey and Sons have also said they have “had issues that weren’t made clear at the beginning of the work”.
Flood Risk
Ms Christian said: “I have asked the DoI for more information on the reasons and will update this post asap.
“Please note the reason for the original closure was part of a comprehensive flood mitigation scheme designed to address the capacity issues of the culvert carrying Farmhill Stream under groves road.
“Studies commissioned by the DoI revealed that during extreme weather events, the current drainage infrastructure poses a significant flood risk to both Groves Road and the NSC.”
As part of the work, a new 900mom overflow pipe will be installed, connecting to a second outfall located east of the NSC. The project also includes constructing additional carriageway gullies and linking existing ones to the new pipe.
Additionally existing utility services will be relocated as needed. Once the drainage infrastructure is in place, the affected section of Groves Road will be fully resurfaced.
The DoI also announced upgrades to the bus stops serving the NSC, installing Kassel kerbs to improve accessibility.
