A Deemster has described an attack with a kitchen utensil on a woman. in her own home as “abhorrent”.
Roman Pszczolkowski, 30, has been jailed for 27 months after admitting a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm.
The Polish national was drinking with his then partner and the woman at her home in September last year.
After a row between him and his partner, the other woman tried to intervene before he struck her with the tenderiser on the knees, ribs and other areas.
When friends who were contacted by the woman arrived they found her sitting on her couch crying with clear bruising on her knees and hands.
Pszczolkowski then left, pulling his partner by her hair on their way out.
Intimidation
After being interviewed about the attack and bailed by police, Pszczolkowski was involved in a second incident with the complainant.
The court heard that while he has been found not guilty of assault on this occasion, he has been found guilty of witness intimation after trying to get her to withdraw her statement to police.
Scared
In a victim impact statement read to the court, the woman said has been left with pain in her knees and ribs following the attack and finds basic everyday events such as tying her shoe laces difficult.
She added that she no longer enjoyed listening to the radio for fear he would sneak into her home and, for the same reason, had even stopped hanging her washing outside to dry.
The woman also described being unable to live at her own home for a while after the attack and struggling to eat causing her to lose weight.
Defence advocate Steve Wood said Pszczolkowski has an “unenviable record” and that alcohol was “clearly the root cause”. of offending, which seems to flick a switch in him.
He added that Pszczolkowski has sought to apologise to the woman for his attack and is seeking support for his issues with alcohol.
Abhorrent
Sentencing Pszczolkowski, Deemster Graeme Cook said: “All in all you are a violent man and in recent times you have been violent towards women – something this court finds abhorrent.”
Deemster Cook said the fact he used a weapon made the situation even worse, but did accept Pszczolkowski had shown some remorse in eventually admitting what he had done.
He sentenced Pszczolkowski to 27 months in prison, which he will serve half on license.
Pszczolkowski will also be subject to an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting or attempting to contact the woman.
