A 38-year-old man from Douglas has been fined £750 after admitting being drunk and disorderly and resisting an officer in the execution of their duties.
Michael James Smith appeared before magistrates on Thursday.
The court heard that on June 16 officers on foot patrol on North Quay were directed by a motorist to an incident outside The Copper Still bar.
Officers saw several people, including Smith, with glazed eyes and slurred speech and after speaking to him, told him he should go home.
Smith began to walk towards the car park of Douglas Railway Station, while being observed by officers which led to a heated discussion during which he swore at them and was warned before being arrested.
This led to a struggle where Smith said he would “knock your blocks off” before PAVA spray was used.
Muscular officer
His advocate David Clegg said Smith could “vaguely” remember being told to go home and said he could understand how his client could be alarmed to, as he may have seen it, have an “unusually muscular officer” follow him.
Knowing the officer in question, Mr Clegg said his client had not made any attempt to be violent, which he said would likely have been “tragically unsuccessful”.
Mr Clegg added that Smith accepted there was “no excuse” for the incident, that Smith had admitted his guilt at the earliest possible chance and wanted to apologise to the court and the officers involved.
Magistrates fined Smith £300 for being drunk and disorderly and a further £450 for resisting the officer and ordered him to pay £125 in court costs.
