A 53-year-old man from Liverpool has been jailed after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of his partner on Good Friday.
John Meadows, of Verney Crescent in Allerton, killed 57-year-old Jill Hughes on March 29 outside the Palace Hotel and Casino on Central Promenade.
The court heard they had arrived on the island earlier that day for a short break with her family.
However, after drinking in several Douglas bars, a disagreement broke out between the family on the promenade.
This culminated in Ms Hughes’ tragic death when Meadows punched her in the side of the neck causing a basal subarachnoid haemorrhage, killing her almost instantly.
Deemster Graeme Cook sentenced Meadows to five years and eight months.
He said: “You John Meadows are the cause of this devastation and you should be thoroughly ashamed of your cowardly actions that evening in hitting a defenceless woman who was offering you no threat at all.”

Steve Maddocks, Detective Superintendent, said: “It is clear having met Jill’s family that the huge void that has been left by her death will never be filled.
“They are a close, loving family and life will never be the same for them, especially for Jill’s mum and dad, sister, brother and three daughters. The family have been dignified throughout what must be a truly awful time.
