Onchan MHK Rob Callister has written to the Department of Infrastructure’s chief executive over concerns about the installation of 20mph speed limit poles in the village.
Mr Callister said he was “writing to express my concerns about the multiple 20mph poles that have recently appeared throughout Onchan.”
He added: “I would like to inquire whether there is a process in place to verify the work being conducted on behalf of the department.”
The MHK shared a photo from a constituent showing a pole allegedly obstructing the pavement.
He stated: “The enclosed image clearly illustrates that this particular pole has been installed incorrectly, as it obstructs the pavement and poses significant challenges for those using prams or individuals with disabilities.”
Mr Callister also questioned the timing of the installations, saying: “I am surprised that these poles are being implemented when the department is currently engaging with all stakeholders in the decision-making process.”
In an exchange with Mr Callister on Facebook, DoI Minister Dr Michelle Haywood said the poles installation is “preparatory work”.
She added: “Poles are going in, but whether the signs that go up are 20mph or 30mph depends on the consultation results and the evaluation of those responses.
“Changing any speed limits could clearly cause confusion, so it’s sensible to make sure the limits for any road are clearly displayed.
“We are sensibly taking advantage of reasonable weather conditions to prepare for any changes (or indeed any roads not changing) after the consultation.
“This is just planning ahead and using our workforce to keep delivering at a time when other highways work stops due to the TT.”
