Patients from the Isle of Man referred for specialist treatment in Liverpool may incur additional costs due to the city’s new visitor charge.
However, the Department of Health and Social Care says there is “no clear evidence” of disproportionate impacts.
The £2 per night CVC, introduced in June, applies to stays in 83 city-centre hotels. With VAT, the surcharge totals £2.40 nightly.
In response to a question from Douglas South MHK Sarah Maltby, Health Minister Claire Christian confirmed the charge could affect patients and their escorts.
However, she added: “Currently there is no clear evidence that patients are being disproportionately impacted – or that barriers to accessing essential NHS services have occurred.”
A table provided by the DHSC shows three major Liverpool hospitals, the Royal, Clatterbridge and Liverpool Women’s Hospital, fall within the charge zone, while others, such as Alder Hey and Aintree don.’t
The Reciprocal Healthcare Arrangement between the Isle of Man and UK covers necessary treatment but not “non-medical matters relating to accommodation”.
Patients can claim reimbursement for accommodation through Patient Transfers, with rates up to £74 per night in London and £50 elsewhere.
Ms Christian added: “The department is undertaking a policy review of Patient Transfer services which includes matters relating to accommodation reimbursement,” with implementation targeted for July 2026.
Patients requiring extended stays are advised to contact Manx Care’s Patient Transfer Office for support.
