MHKs Want More Sittings

Glenfaba and Peel MHK Kate Lord-Brennan wants politicians to have more sittings throughout the year.

Her motion to amend standing orders will be put to members in October.

Tynwald breaks up for the summer in the third week of July, returning in late October, though occasional summer sitings have been held during Covid and on some special occasions.

By contract, the UK’s House of Commons went on recess on July 22 this yea and is due to return on September 29.

Ms Lord-Brennan’s amendment would see Keys and LegCo able to sit twice in October before the first Tynwald of the parliamentary year.

Her other proposals would see two additional sittings scheduled in January for Keys and LegCo, prior to the January sitting of Tynwald.

While Ms Lord-Brennan also believes there should be a week’s recess in February, to align with the half term for schools, and that the February Tynwald sitting, when the Budget is held, should be brought forward to the week before that recess.

Her motion is supported by Douglas South MHK Sarah Maltby.
