Peel’s RNLI lifeboat crew went to the aid of a yacht suffering engine failure six nautical miles southwest of Peel on Friday.
The callout marked the first emergency response for volunteer Mike Taylor as coxswain of Peel’s Shannon class lifeboat, Frank and Brenda Winter.
While there were communication issues with the yacht vessel at first the crew found the yacht and checked the solo skipper was fine.
After assessing sea conditions, the crew decided to tow the vessel to Peel for repairs. As they approached harbour, they switched to an alongside tow to secure the yacht safely at the Breakwater.
Mike said: ‘Towing can be dangerous for casualties and crew if carried out incorrectly, so it is important that our crew members develop and maintain their knowledge and skills through regular training.
“Today everyone put their training to use and performed well.’
Lifeboat Operations Manager Allen Corlett added: “Our volunteer crew members left their places of work and family events to respond to this call for help.
“As our charity enters its third century, our founder, Sir William Hillary, would be proud of their enduring commitment to his vision of saving lives at sea.”
