The Health Minister has outlined Manx Care’s final overspend for the 2024-25 financial year reached £15.3 million.
Claire Christian’s motion is a request for a supplementary vote to cover the shortfall.
“Manx care continue to face significant financial challenges, similar to all health and care providers on the adjacent aisle, including rising drug costs and often unpredictable, high-cost packages of care,” Ms Christian said.
The overspend had initially been forecast at £18.6 million, later revised to £15.8 million, with additional risks potentially pushing it to £21.15 million.
Risks
The minister noted that some risks, such as unforeseen tertiary costs, did not materialise, resulting in the final £15.3 million figure.
“The department has not been blind to the challenges,” she added, highlighting that £15 million of pressures were attributed to pay and inflation.
Cost-saving measures, including reductions in agency spending and medicines optimisation, achieved £13.4 million in savings.
However, Ms Christian acknowledged further work is needed: “We must prioritise good quality, safe and effective, essential services and focus on delivering improvements to productivity and efficiency.”
