Efforts to remove hardened bitumen spilled on the Mountain Road between Brandywell and the Bungalow have failed, prompting emergency resurfacing work.
The bitumen was spilt by a private sector contractor.
A 210-metre stretch of the Ramsey-bound lane between Brandywell and Hailwood’s Rise will now be planed out and resurfaced.
The Department of Infrastructure confirmed that road markings and studs will also need replacing.
The southern section of the Mountain Road (Creg Ny Baa to the Bungalow) will close from 6pm on Thursday, reopening by 6pm on Friday.
A statement said: “Every effort will be made to get the road open late afternoon on Friday before the evening commuter run, but this is not guaranteed.”
Meanwhile, resurfacing work on the A5 New Castletown Road at Santon has been suspended, with crews redeployed to the Mountain Road. Traffic lights will be removed temporarily, but a speed limit will remain due to an unfinished temporary surface.
Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes during the closure.
