Clearly last nights bad weather wasn’t enough, as we bring you a further two weather warnings that come into place from this evening.
A delightful yellow weather warning, issued island wide, for heavy rain and gales, and an amber warning for coastal overtopping and inner harbour flooding.
Our advice? Get your sandbags out, bring the cats in and get to bed with a brew and some rubbish tele.
Yellow Weather Warning
The yellow weather warning for heavy rain and gales comes into place at 7pm this evening and is issued for a wonderful 12 hours until 7am tomorrow.
Heavy Rain: An area of rain will affect the island later this evening & tonight, turning quite heavy at times, before quickly clearing away early Friday morning. Rainfall accumulations are expected to be between 15-25mm quite widely across the island, but with 30-40mm possible over higher ground. Due to the heavier bursts which are expected at times, there is a risk of standing water developing in places, as well as a risk of some localised flooding where the ground becomes temporarily saturated.
Gale Force Winds: The wind will increase from the south or southeast tonight becoming strong to gale force and perhaps touching severe gale force in places, before quickly veering west or north-westerly around dawn on Friday, giving gusts quickly widely of 50-55mph. These wind strengths in summer are unusual, and therefore it is advisable to secure any outdoor furniture and take precautions if camping. The winds will gradually ease Friday morning.
Amber Weather Warning
The Met Office has also issued an amber warning for coastal overtopping and inner harbour flooding.
The weather warning comes into at one minute past midnight tonight, and will stay in place until 4:30am tomorrow.
The areas most at risk for coastal overtopping are all parts of Douglas Promenade, Shore Road Rushen, Castletown Promenade, Laxey and Ramsey Promenades.
Coastal Overtopping: Strong to gale force south to south-easterly winds, coupled with high spring tides will create some very large waves and lead to significant overtopping of sea water and debris onto exposed coastal roads and promenades for a couple of hours around the time of high tide tonight (Fri 23rd Aug ~2:20am).
Inner Harbour Flooding: The high spring tides and large surge values will also lead to some inner harbour flooding in some of the islands harbours around tonight’s high tide (Fri 23rd Aug ~ 2:20am).
In Douglas flooding is expected on the tongue, parts of Lake Road and the carparks riverside of Lake Road, and perhaps a risk of some minor flooding on North Quay. For Ramsey the areas most at risk are Mezeron Corner and West Quay.
Flood defences need to be deployed for Castletown harbour.
