The northern civic community site is expected to reopen in mid to late April 2026 following a changeover period between operators, Infrastructure Minister Tim Crookall has confirmed.
Manx Rock has been appointed as the new contractor following a bidding process. The department’s preferred governance structure is a joint board, with consultation ongoing with northern local authorities.
Local authorities have been advised of their expected contributions and Mr Crookall told Keys the cost increase would be “something along the lines of 20%”.
The site, previously operated by Ramsey Commissioners, cost £432,000 in 2024 according to audited accounts.
The minister said the exact cost depends on waste volumes and types “due to the variable elements within the contract”.
Mr Crookall said the increase reflects “cost inflation and the improved services that we will be building into the offer, including an operational reuse centre”.
Northern residents face a period of around one month without access to the Ramsey site. The minister said the public “may be able to use other amenity sites, hold materials or until the new one opens, or contact a local waste contractor”.
He acknowledged the situation would cause “frustration for those in the north”.
