New Attorney General Announced

The Isle of Man will have a new attorney general from next year.

Oliver Helfrich will succeed Walter Wannenburgh in January 2027.

The Attorney General acts as the legal adviser to the Lieutenant Governor, the Council of Ministers, government departments and statutory boards.

Helfrich qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales in 2002 before moving to the Island the following year. He became a Manx Advocate in 2006.

He has previously occupied senior roles in the Attorney General’s Chambers and at his private practice Humphrey & Helfrich.

A government spokesperson said: “Throughout his career, Mr Helfrich has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service and the administration of justice.”

Helfrich commented: “‘I look forward to serving the island and working with colleagues across government and the legal profession in the years ahead.”

Wannenburgh will be retiring after four years as Attorney General and 11 years as a Crown officer.

Helfrich will be sworn in officially next year.
