No Welfare for Training Teachers

A question posed to Treasury Minister Michael Crowe MHK has highlighted a lack of financial support for teachers training on island.

In a written Tynwald question, Glenfaba and Peel MHK Katryna Baptist asked what welfare provision existed for trainee teachers undertaking qualifications on the island, who are ineligible for student award support.

In response, Crowe confirmed that: “There is no specific welfare provision for trainee teachers undertaking training on the island who are ineligible for student award support.

“This is also the case for other students on the island who are ineligible for student award support.”

He added: “Depending on their circumstances, trainee teachers may qualify for benefits such as Income Support or Employed Person’s Allowance. Those who are unsure of their entitlement are encouraged to contact Treasury’s Social Security Division for advice.

“While social security benefits may provide support for those who qualify, they are not designed to replace the maintenance support available through student awards.”
