Manx Care will go pink this week to highlight the importance of organ donation this week.
Councils, businesses, hospitals and community groups across the UK are joining together for Organ Donation Week by turning their buildings pink, to encourage people to confirm their support for organ donation by adding their name and decision to the NHS Organ Donor Register.
The Human Tissue and Organ Donation Act, also known as Daniel’s Law, will soon be implemented on the island meaning that an opt-out system of organ donation will be introduced.
The ‘opt-out’ consent system will mean that individuals who are over 18 years of age, who have not opted out and are not in an ‘excluded group’ will be considered to have agreed to become an organ donor when they die.
There are around 7,000 people waiting for a transplant across the British Isles. However, as only 1,400 people die in circumstances where organ donation is possible
Anthony Clarkson, Director of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation for NHS Blood and Transplant said: “It’s brilliant of Manx Care to show its support for Organ Donation Week in the year of the NHS Organ Donor Register’s 30th birthday. The modern organ donor card is pink, and it certainly gets conversations going.
“We need people in the Isle of Man to add their name and decision to the NHS Organ Donor Register. This could be the difference between life and death for someone else.”
