Rushen MHK Michelle Haywood has gained the British Sub Aqua Club’s highest instructor award by passing an exam this summer.
Michelle was one of three candidates who were examined in 23 different areas including their personal diving skills, dive planning, teaching and coaching skills.
The MHK joins a cohort of around 35 active National Instructors worldwide who contribute to the British Sub Aqua Club by leading instructor training, writing and developing dive and snorkel courses.
National Diving Instructor
The National Instructor exam was the culmination of a number of training and development courses that Michelle has attended over the last three years.
The five day event was held on the Isle of Man this year, and the examination team were impressed with the quality of the diving, the standard of the venue and the equipment and the flexible approach taken by the team at Discover Diving to support the event.
For Michelle, as a Director of Discover Diving, this was a double-edged sword: “While it was great to sit the exam on home turf the added stress of hosting this prestigious event with the most senior BSAC instructors making up the examination team really piled on the pressure.
“I had to be very determined to let the Discover Diving crew get on with their roles and focus on demonstrating my own instructing and coaching skills”.
Michelle will be presented with her National Instructor award at the BSAC Dive Conference in October, where she is also due to give a presentation about the Steam Packet vessel Mona’s Queen.
