It’s time to celebrate those who make a real difference in our community.
That is the pledge from Mayor of Douglas, Councillor Natalie Byron-Teare, as the race begins to find two unsung heroes in the capital.
She has officially opened nominations for an initiative which has grown in popularity since being launched in 2022.
Community awards
The Community Awards 2024 will recognise a Community Champion – a Douglas ratepayer who has made a significant difference; and a Young Hero – a young person aged 15 or under who resides in Douglas and has made an outstanding contribution to the local community.
The criteria is wide open and can range from someone who helps the vulnerable or disadvantaged to those inspirational mentors who empower our youth.
It can include dedicated volunteers and tireless fundraisers who selflessly give their time to support others or environmental advocates working to protect our natural surroundings.

‘It literally is open to anyone and everyone who benefits the community or its people in a variety of different ways,’ said Councillor Mrs Byron-Teare J.P.
Nominations will be accepted up until July 31 after which the Mayor will chair a three-person panel to determine the winners, which will be announced at this year’s Civic Sunday in September.
‘These awards are close to my heart and that of many of my colleagues on the Council,’ explained Madam Mayor.
‘They really are designed to shine the spotlight on those who go above and beyond to make a difference in the Island and make a positive contribution to the lives of others, often under the radar.

‘Put simply, the Community Champion and Young Hero accolades focus on those ordinary people who make an extraordinary difference.
‘We look forward to receiving as many entries as possible once again and I already know we are going to have a very difficult job selecting the winners.’
Judging panel
The judging panel will take into account the level of commitment shown by the individual; any obstacles that they have had to overcome and the number of people that the commitment has benefitted.

The individual must live in Douglas, although nominations can be made from all Island residents.
