Panel Debate on Civil Liberties

The Positive Action Group is holding a panel debate on the subject of civil liberties next week.

The event is entitled ‘The Future of Civil Liberties on the Isle of Man’ and will feature three guest panelists.

Speaking at the event will be Peter Murcott, retired law lecturer, Ged Power, retired police officer and Tony Brown, former MHK and Chief Minister. 

Monday’s event will be chaired by local advocate, Damian Ciappelli, Chairman of PAG.

Civil Liberties

Civil liberties has become a hot topic since the Covid lockdowns five years ago and calls into question the limits of the state’s right to interfere with individual liberty and freedoms.  

The issue is currently being hotly debated on the island in relation to the Safe Access Zones and Protected Public Places Bill 2024.

PAG believes that this private members Bill “will harm traditional freedoms of protest enjoyed on the island and lacks the appropriate checks and balances consistent with a modern democracy”.  

The public are encouraged to attend and take part in the conversation;  there will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions.

The panel debate will take place on Monday (March 31) at 7.30 pm at the Manx Legion in Douglas.
