The Isle of Man Constabulary has issued a warning to parents, schools and young people after a sharp increase in the misuse of artificial intelligence technology.
School Education Officers have reported growing concerns that AI is being used to bully or ridicule peers, including the creation of rude, offensive or sexualised images.
In some cases, officers say the images created could be considered prohibited or indecent.
AI Misuse
Police have stressed that while embracing new technology can be positive, misusing AI can carry serious consequences.
Under the Sexual Offences and Obscene Publications Act 2021, creating or sharing inappropriate or sexualised images of others, including AI-generated images, can amount to a criminal offence, punishable by up to three years in prison.
Officers say many young people are unaware that their actions could be breaking the law. What may seem like a joke, a trend or something done without much thought can quickly escalate into a serious criminal matter.
The Constabulary is urging parents and guardians to talk openly with children about the responsible use of AI.
They also warn that once images are shared online, they can be impossible to retrieve, spreading quickly, being saved by others and remaining online long after the original intent.
Working With Schools
School Education Officers are currently working closely with schools across the island, delivering structured sessions focused on indecent images, device use and the potential legal and personal consequences.
The aim is to help young people understand the risks and encourage safer behaviour both online and offline.
Police are also encouraging the public to share the message so parents and guardians can access advice and guidance to support children as technology continues to develop.
