The Tynwald Management Committee has proposed adding Sophia Morrison (1859-1917) and Annie Bridson (1893-1985) to the Manx Patriots’ Roll of Honour.
Proposed by Speaker Juan Watterson, the committee wants to recognise their distinct contributions to Manx cultural heritage.
Sophia Morrison, a folklorist and cultural activist, was instrumental in the early Manx cultural revival.
As a founding member of Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh (the Manx Language Society) in 1899, she dedicated herself to recording Manx oral traditions, most notably through her 1911 publication Manx Fairy Tales.
Annie Bridson contributed significantly as an educator and chronicler of Manx life. As headmistress of Douglas High School for Girls from 1928-1953, she influenced generations of Manx students.
She also became the island’s second woman MHK and was the first female president of the Manx Labour Party.
The Manx Patriots’ Roll of Honour recognises deceased individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the Isle of Man.
Previous honourees include poet T.E. Brown and war hero and police officer Hector Duff, who was the most recent addition in 2021.
The proposal will be debated in at the July sitting of Tynwald.
