Renal Services Running Beyond Capacity

Manx Care has confirmed that renal services are now operating beyond agreed capacity, with demand continuing to grow and pressures increasing across both workforce and infrastructure.

A workshop held in June with the Renal Team and the Unscheduled Care Division examined the future of renal provision on the island.

The Manx Care board was told that the current model is heavily reliant on hospital‑based haemodialysis, and that simply expanding hospital capacity would not provide a long‑term solution.

Participants reached a clear consensus that renal care should move toward a blended model, increasing the use of home dialysis alongside hospital‑based treatment.

Manx Care says a business case will be developed to support a phased transition to this approach.
