Diners will soon be able to check how clean and well run island eateries are, under a new Food Hygiene Scheme launched today by DEFA.
More than 300 cafés, restaurants, takeaways and pubs will be inspected from early 2027, with ratings published online as each assessment is completed.
Scores will range from 5 (very good) to 0 (urgent improvement necessary), based on food handling, cleanliness and management systems.
Food Hygiene Ratings
All in‑scope businesses will receive an inspection during the early 2027 window to ensure a level playing field. Venues can also choose to display their rating using an official sticker.
The scheme mirrors the Food Standards Agency model used in England and Wales, offering a familiar system for residents and visitors while keeping existing Manx standards unchanged.
Ahead of January’s inspections, DEFA will run support sessions including presentations, one‑to‑one advice and workshops.
The first What to expect when you’re inspected event takes place in Douglas on Thursday, August 6, with further dates on September 2 and 30.
Environment Minister Clare Barber MHK said: “This is a positive step for both consumers and businesses, giving people greater confidence when eating out while recognising and encouraging high standards.
“We are taking a phased approach to ensure businesses have the time and support they need ahead of publication. I would encourage all cafés, restaurants and takeaways to engage early.”
