Work is underway to include on-call firefighters in the Government Unified Pension Scheme (GUS).
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) wants to hear from any retired firefighters, who were employed on or after September 30 2007, who want to join.
Employment law provides that people working on a part time basis should have the same rights as those on a full time basis, which means those carrying out on-call duties should be eligible for inclusion into GUS.
This also extends to those who were employed on or after September 30 2007, including those who have since retired.
On-Call Firefighter
Any on-call firefighter (at any rank), or whole-time firefighter who retired at either Sub Officer, Leading Firefighter, or firefighter, is eligible and they are asked to get in touch if they would like to be considered.
The GUS is a contributory scheme which means members who are eligible will have to make the relevant contributions.
The current rate of personal contributions is 13.5% of the relevant earnings.
Government will also add their retrospective contributions in line with the scheme rules.
Eligible Criteria
At this stage the Department is asking all those who are within the eligible criteria to get in touch to help with scoping the work involved to enable those eligible to join GUS.

Alternatively interested parties can visit their local Fire Station on a training night and fill out a form there.
Fire Station Training Nights run from 6.30-9.30pm in Kirk Michael (Monday), Laxey (Tuesday), Peel and Ramsey (Wednesday), and Castletown, Malew and Rushen (Thursday).
