The worthy winner of the David Teece Award for Excellence for 2024 was Manx athlete Regan Corrin.
Regan Corrin was presented with the award by David’s sons Elliott and Nathan at the IOM Athletics Track and Field Awards.
He received the trophy, and also a framed copy of the introduction which detailed the background to the trophy and also to Regan’s performances this year.
David Teece Award
The David Teece Award for Excellence is presented each year to an athlete from the Isle of Man who has achieved excellence in the sport of athletics over the past 12 months.
David was an exceptional athlete who specialised in sprinting events, being outstanding at 100, 200 and 400 metres. He represented the Isle of Man at the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand in 1990.
David very sadly passed away in 2008 at only 40 years of age, but his name lives on in local athletics in many ways, not least through this wonderful trophy which has been presented in his memory each year since 2009.
Enormous Potential
This year the award goes to an athlete who showed enormous potential across a wide variety of disciplines from a very young age competing in local events at the NSC.
Corrin’s development really accelerated when he began representing Team Isle of Man in the Youth Development League as an U13 athlete.
In 2020 Regan’s pb in the high jump was 1.70 metres, in 2021 it was 1.78m, in 2022 it was 1.86m, in 2023 it was 1.97m, and this year he has taken it up to an incredible 2.13 metres.
If that performance at the recent Southport Waterloo Open Meeting is ratified on the European and World ranking lists, he will be ranked Number 1 in Europe and Number 4 in the World in the U18 age group.
First Great Britain Vest
He received his first Great Britain vest this summer, when he finished fourth in the High Jump in the European U18 Championships in Slovakia.
He was in the bronze medal position for most of the competition, agonisingly losing out on a medal right at the end.
This year he also became the first Manx Long Jumper to reach the 7-metre mark, with a best of 7.08 metres in the final Northern League match.
He has also set new pbs in the Triple Jump, 100 metres and 300 metres, and equalled his pb in the 200 metres.
He is a true inspiration to everyone in local athletics, not just for his fantastic performances but also for the way he encourages everyone else.
